I finished Mere Churchianity from Michael Spencer last week. I was interested in this book because it is aimed at people who have left, or are thinking of leaving, the church, but who haven't left Jesus. There are parts of the book that were really, really good. There were other parts that were not so good.
What makes this a book that you should read is Michael's focus on Jesus and on discipleship as following Jesus. This is so important. Way too often we lose site of Jesus. We are supposed to follow and be like Jesus, not follow some church leaders or philosophy or method.
What I didn't like so much was his tone at times. I'm of the belief that you can speak truth and even speak against something while saying it in a good, humble and helpful way. Unfortunately, Michael doesn't always come across with the best tone.
This book was like a roller coaster for me. I'd be reading and go, "oh, this is good," and then I'd get to the next chapter and go, "um, not so sure about this." With that being said, I'm not sure if I would recommend this book or not. It's not that it's bad. It's just not all that helpful. And I think there are better reads for your time.
I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
